Reddit lead generation tools for indie makers (2026 comparison)
· 8 min read
"Reddit lead generation tool" covers very different products. Some send you an email every time a word appears. Some read posts and try to judge whether the writer needs something. Some write and post replies for you. They solve different problems, and one of those categories can get your account banned.
This comparison sorts the options by type first, then covers a few specific tools. Everything said about each tool comes from that company's own website at the time of writing. Features change and prices change more often, so we do not list prices here; check each official site for current pricing and limits.
Decide what kind of tool you need first
Before comparing products, decide which of these three jobs you want done.
- Keyword monitoring. You give the tool words and phrases; it tells you when they appear in new posts or comments. Fast and predictable. The catch is that it matches words, not meaning, so you read every match yourself and many are irrelevant.
- Problem or intent filtering. The tool searches broadly and then filters, usually with AI, to keep posts from people who seem to have a specific need. Fewer results, and more of them worth reading. The catch is that you trust the filter, so you want to be able to see why a post was kept.
- Automated replying. The tool finds posts and writes or posts replies, sometimes from accounts it manages. This promises scale. In practice it is the category to avoid, for reasons covered below.
Finally, decide how much reading you are willing to do. A keyword tool with twenty phrases can easily send you a hundred matches a day, and someone has to open each one. If you have an hour a day for this, that may be fine. If you have fifteen minutes, you need either far fewer phrases or a tool that filters before you read.
Also decide which platforms matter. Some tools cover only Reddit. Others cover Hacker News, X, Bluesky and many more sources. If your customers are spread across several platforms, one feed beats four separate inboxes.
The tools, one by one
GummySearch. A Reddit research tool. Its website now states that GummySearch is closed as of November 30, 2025, so it is no longer an option. If you used it, the rest of this list covers the other types of tools.
F5Bot. A keyword monitoring service that watches Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters and emails you when your keywords appear in a new post or comment. You can get alerts instantly, batched, or as a daily digest. It has a free plan that the site labels "free forever", and paid plans; the top paid plan adds Slack and Discord integration and RSS and JSON feeds. Setting up a few phrases and seeing what comes in takes little effort. Because it matches keywords, expect to filter the results by hand.
Syften. Describes itself as AI-filtered keyword monitoring for the public web. The sources it lists include the public web, Reddit, X/Twitter, Hacker News, Indie Hackers, GitHub, Product Hunt, the Stack Exchange family, forums, YouTube, podcasts, various Slack communities, Bluesky and Mastodon. The site says AI filtering runs on top of your mention stream and suppresses low-value traffic such as spammy posts, auto-promos, duplicates and weak matches. Alerts can go to email, Slack, RSS, an API or a webhook. According to the site, onboarding is automated: after you sign up, it researches your company, competitors and product names and creates the initial monitoring setup. It fits people who want many sources covered by keyword alerts.
Brand24. An AI social listening platform aimed at enterprises, agencies, marketers, PR teams and SaaS companies. It tracks mentions across social media, news, blogs, videos, forums, podcasts and reviews, with features such as sentiment analysis, reach and engagement metrics, hashtag tracking and automated reporting. Its features center on mentions of a brand, which assumes people already talk about yours. If your product is young and rarely mentioned, there may be little for it to track yet.
Ownfeed. Our own product, so weigh this paragraph accordingly. You paste your product URL; Ownfeed works out who would need it, searches public posts on Reddit, X, Bluesky and Hacker News every day, and uses AI to keep only the posts where your product would help. The result is one feed you read in a few minutes a day. You write every reply yourself; it never posts for you and never connects to your social accounts. It belongs in the problem-filtering category, and it does not do brand monitoring or analytics.
Why we do not recommend auto-reply tools
Tools that write and post replies for you are tempting, because replying is the part that takes effort. On Reddit they run into several structural problems.
- Subreddits are moderated by people who remove promotional replies, and many use automated filters that catch new or low-activity accounts and repeated wording.
- Generated replies tend to look alike. Regulars notice the pattern quickly, and once a subreddit notices, your product name becomes associated with spam there.
- Reddit's own rules prohibit spam and manipulation, and accounts that break them can be suspended. A banned account takes its history and reputation with it.
- Even when a generated reply survives, it rarely starts a conversation. The value of replying on Reddit comes from the follow-up, which a bot cannot do well.
The part worth automating is the searching and filtering. Writing the reply is the part that works precisely because a person did it. Our guide to finding customers on Reddit covers how to write those replies without getting banned.
Which tool fits which situation
- You want to start today with no budget, mainly on Reddit and Hacker News: F5Bot's free plan, plus the manual search routine.
- You are comfortable writing keyword filters and want very broad source coverage with alerts in Slack or via webhook: Syften.
- You have an established brand and need mention tracking, sentiment and reports for a team: Brand24.
- You want a short daily list of people who need your product across Reddit, X, Bluesky and Hacker News, and you will write the replies yourself: Ownfeed.
- You want a tool that posts replies for you: we would not use one on Reddit, for the reasons above.
Whichever you pick, the quality of your search phrases decides most of the results. Phrases that describe a problem in the customer's words find people; phrases that name a product category find articles and competitors. The social listening guide for indie hackers covers how to write them.
How to evaluate any tool in one week
Marketing pages all promise leads. A one-week test tells you what you actually get.
- Write down ten phrases that describe your customers' problem before you sign up, so you test every tool on the same input.
- Each day, count how many results you would genuinely reply to. That number matters more than the total.
- Note how long it took to get from the alert or feed to a reply you were happy with.
- At the end of the week, divide the time spent by the number of good conversations started. Pick the tool with the best ratio, including doing it by hand.
No tool replaces the reply. The best one is whichever gets you to more good conversations per hour, on the platforms where your customers actually are.
