F5Bot is the tool many makers start with. You give it a few keywords, and it emails you when they show up on Reddit, Hacker News or Lobsters. It costs nothing and has run since 2017. People start looking for an alternative for a few reasons: the inbox fills with posts that only match a word, the alerts come too late to join the thread, or their customers talk somewhere F5Bot does not look. This guide covers what F5Bot's plans actually include, where the free plan stops, and 6 other tools compared by price, platforms and how they deal with noise. Prices were checked on each company's own site on October 20, 2026.

A disclosure first: I build Ownfeed, one of the tools below. To keep that from bending the comparison, the tools are sorted by their cheapest paid monthly plan, F5Bot's own paid plans are treated as a real option, and Ownfeed's section says what it does not do.

What F5Bot does

F5Bot checks Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters every few minutes for your keywords and sends an email when one appears in a new post or comment. Signing up needs only an email address, and the free plan is for personal use. Figure 2 is its homepage. The paid plans raise the limits and add features, and Table 1 lists them as shown on its plan comparison page, which is Figure 3.

Figure 3. F5Bot's plan comparison page. The Free column has no ad-free emails, keyword filtering or full post text (captured October 20, 2026)

Each plan also caps how many alerts one keyword can send a day: 10 on Free, 30 on Silver and 100 on Gold. Yearly billing is available on Silver ($109 a year) and Gold ($549 a year). On Gold and Platinum, AI filtering includes the first $10 a month of model usage, and heavier use is billed on top of the plan.

Where F5Bot gets in the way

Most complaints about F5Bot are really about the free plan. Three limits matter in practice.

  1. Noise. F5Bot matches words, not meaning. A keyword like "invoice" or "CRM" matches people asking for help, but also job posts, memes and people selling the same thing you sell. The free plan has no filtering at all, so every match lands in your inbox until you hit the cap of 20 a day.
  2. Delay. The free plan can send an alert up to 2 hours after F5Bot finds the match, as Figure 4 shows. On a busy subreddit, a question asked 2 hours ago often already has its answer. Silver cuts the wait to 5 minutes.
  3. Coverage. Every F5Bot plan, including Platinum, covers the same three sites. X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, YouTube and forums are not on the list at any price.
Bar chart of the longest alert delay on each F5Bot plan: Free up to 120 minutes (highlighted), Silver at $9.99 a month up to 5 minutes, Gold at $49.99 a month instant.
Figure 4. Longest wait between F5Bot finding a match and sending the alert, by plan, as stated on its plan comparison page

The first two limits are fixed by paying F5Bot. Only the third one forces you to leave. That is worth knowing before you compare anything else, because the cheapest answer to noise or delay is $9.99, not a new tool.

When the free plan is enough

F5Bot Free does its job well when your keywords are rare. Your product's name, your company name, a competitor's name or an unusual technical term will produce a few matches a week, and nearly all of them are worth reading. In that case the 5 keywords and 20 alerts a day are not a real limit, and a 2-hour delay rarely costs you anything, because brand mentions are not usually urgent.

It also suits you if your customers mostly talk on Reddit and Hacker News, and you are fine skimming a short daily email. Many developer tools fit that description. If that is you, keep the free plan, and come back to this page when the inbox stops being readable.

Paying starts to make sense in three cases: you want to track problems rather than names, which means common words and far more noise; you want to reply while the thread is still fresh; or your buyers spend their time on X, Bluesky or LinkedIn. Table 3 near the end matches each case to the cheapest tool that fixes it.

The alternatives at a glance

Table 2 lists F5Bot and 6 alternatives, sorted by their cheapest paid monthly plan. The noise column says whether a tool only matches keywords or also uses AI to drop posts that are not relevant. Figure 5 shows which platforms each one covers, and the hero chart at the top, Figure 1, compares the entry prices.

RedShip and Subreddit Signals cover Reddit only.
Figure 5. Platforms covered by each tool's plans. Add-on means a paid extra on top of the plan. Lobsters, which only F5Bot covers, is left out

Figure 5 shows the trade-off. Two of the alternatives, RedShip and Subreddit Signals, cover less than F5Bot does, since they skip Hacker News. What they add is judgment: they try to tell you which Reddit posts are worth your time. The tools that reach X, Bluesky or LinkedIn are Ownfeed at $39, Syften with paid add-ons, and the two expensive multi-platform tools.

F5Bot Silver and Gold

Before switching, consider upgrading. Silver at $9.99 a month fixes the delay (5 minutes instead of 2 hours), quadruples the keywords to 20, adds keyword filtering such as excluding words or limiting to subreddits, shows the full post text in the email and removes the ads. Gold at $49.99 adds AI filtering, where you describe in plain language what you want and AI checks each match, plus 200 keywords, 90 days of history, feeds and Slack or Discord alerts. Neither adds a single new platform. You can see both columns in Figure 3.

RedShip

RedShip watches Reddit for threads where people ask for what you sell, scores them, and also tracks competitor mentions, Reddit threads that rank on Google, and how AI assistants cite Reddit. You write the replies yourself. The Founder plan is $29 a month for 1 product, 10 keywords and 3 competitors. Company is $49 a month for 3 products, 30 keywords and 10 competitors. Compared with F5Bot, you lose Hacker News and Lobsters and gain scoring. I could not confirm from its page whether a free trial exists. Figure 6 shows its homepage.

Subreddit Signals

Subreddit Signals sorts posts by buyer intent within subreddits you choose, so you read likely leads first instead of every keyword match. Starter is $29 a month for 1 brand and up to 10 subreddits. Pro is $59 a month for up to 5 brands and 25 subreddits, plus tracking of visits that come from AI assistants. Both plans have a 14-day trial that needs a card. The catch for F5Bot users is that you watch chosen subreddits rather than all of Reddit, so a question posted somewhere unexpected can be missed. Figure 7 shows its pricing page.

Syften

Syften is the closest thing to a bigger F5Bot. It monitors Reddit, Hacker News, Indie Hackers, Stack Exchange, GitHub, forums, Slack communities, mailing lists, podcasts and the open web. Entry is $29.95 a month with 3 filters and 100 results a day. Standard is $49.95 with 20 filters, AI filtering and Slack. PRO is $119.95 with 100 filters, webhooks and MCP. X costs $40 a month extra and YouTube $20, on Standard and above. Every plan has a 14-day trial with no card. If you like writing precise keyword rules, Syften rewards it. If you want the tool to decide what matters, you need Standard. Figure 8 shows its homepage.

Ownfeed

Ownfeed is the tool I build. Instead of keywords you paste your product URL, it reads the product page, and every day it searches public posts on Reddit, X, Bluesky and Hacker News. AI keeps only the posts where your product would help, such as people describing a problem or asking for a tool, and puts them in one feed (Figure 9 and Figure 10). You read the feed, save posts, and reply in your own words. It never posts for you and never connects to your social accounts.

Pricing: a $1 trial for 1 day that becomes $39 a month unless you cancel first, or $89 every 3 months. Each plan covers 1 product. What it does not do, compared with F5Bot: there is no free plan, it collects once a day rather than every few minutes, it does not cover Lobsters, and it is not built for tracking every mention of a brand name. If you only need to know when your name comes up, F5Bot Free is the better tool.

BuzzAbout

BuzzAbout is an AI research tool across Reddit, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, sold on credits. Starter is $98 a month for 2,000 credits and 1 listening agent. Pro is $178 for 5,000 credits and 3 seats. Business is $450 for 20,000 credits and unlimited agents. Monthly plans start with a $1 one-day trial. It answers a different question from F5Bot: not "who mentioned this word today" but "what do people on these networks think about this topic". Figure 11 shows its pricing page.

Octolens

Octolens is what F5Bot would look like as a company-wide brand monitor. It covers Reddit, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Bluesky, Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Overflow, DEV and review sites, and its AI rates every mention as high, medium or low relevance, with alerts only for the levels you choose. Pro is $159 a month billed yearly, with 15,000 mentions, 10 keywords and hourly refresh. Scale is $499 a month billed yearly and adds real-time refresh. There is a 7-day trial with no card. It solves noise and coverage at once, at a price aimed at teams rather than solo makers. Figure 12 shows its pricing page.

How to choose

Start from the limit you actually hit, not from the tool list. Table 3 pairs each common reason for leaving F5Bot Free with the cheapest tool in this guide that removes it.

  1. Write down which limit pushed you out. If you cannot name one, stay on the free plan.
  2. Clean your keywords before paying for more of them. A keyword that sent nothing useful last month will not get better with more slots.
  3. Keep F5Bot Free running during any trial. It costs nothing, and comparing the two inboxes for a week shows what the paid tool actually adds.
  4. Prefer tools where you write the reply. Reddit communities remove promotional comments, and a tool that posts for you puts your account at risk.

If you would rather do it by hand, the guide to finding customers on Reddit covers searching and replying without a tool. The comparison of Reddit lead generation tools goes deeper on the lead side, and the GummySearch alternatives guide covers research tools as well as alerts.

FAQ

Is F5Bot still free in 2026?

Yes. F5Bot's Free plan costs nothing and needs no card. On October 20, 2026 it allowed 5 keywords, 20 alerts a day and 10 alerts per keyword a day, with alerts up to 2 hours late, 7 days of match history, no keyword filtering and ads in the emails. It is for personal use only.

What is the cheapest F5Bot alternative?

F5Bot's own Silver plan at $9.99 a month, which fixes the delay, the keyword limit and the lack of filtering. Among other companies, RedShip and Subreddit Signals start at $29 a month, Syften at $29.95 and Ownfeed at $39. Prices were checked on October 20, 2026.

Does F5Bot monitor X or LinkedIn?

No. Every F5Bot plan covers Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters only. For X, look at Ownfeed, BuzzAbout or Octolens, which include it in their plans, or Syften, which sells it as a $40 a month add-on. For LinkedIn, BuzzAbout and Octolens cover it.

How do I get fewer irrelevant F5Bot alerts?

First, replace common words with phrases people use when they have the problem, and remove keywords that sent nothing useful. On F5Bot, Silver adds keyword filtering such as excluded words and subreddit limits, and Gold adds AI filtering. Tools such as RedShip, Subreddit Signals, Ownfeed and Octolens filter with AI on every plan.

How fast are F5Bot alerts?

It depends on the plan. F5Bot's comparison page says Free alerts can arrive up to 2 hours after a match is found, Silver within 5 minutes, and Gold and above instantly or on a schedule you choose.

Can I use F5Bot together with another tool?

Yes, and it is often the cheapest setup. Keep F5Bot Free for your brand name and competitors, and use a paid tool only for the gap that pushed you out, such as X coverage or filtering of problem keywords.

Method and limits

  • F5Bot's plan limits come from its plan comparison page, and all prices come from each company's own website, read on October 20, 2026. Where a page did not show something, it is left out rather than taken from a third-party site. Prices change, so check before you buy.
  • The 6 alternatives were chosen from earlier research on Reddit monitoring and lead tools, limited to tools that send or list matching posts. Research-only tools and tools without a visible price were left out. The list is not exhaustive.
  • The noise column describes how each tool says it filters, from its own site. Platform coverage is what each plan lists. A platform named only in a FAQ is not counted.
  • I did not run a side-by-side test of result quality or alert speed. This guide compares prices, limits, platforms and stated features, not how many useful posts each tool finds.
  • Conflict of interest: I build and sell Ownfeed, one of the tools compared. Screenshots of other tools are of their public pages. No tool paid for or reviewed this guide, and there are no affiliate links.
