The closest alternatives to Syften are F5Bot, KWatch.io, RedShip, Subreddit Signals, Ownfeed, Awario, Buska and Octolens. The cheapest is F5Bot at $12.99 a month for its paid Silver plan, and the broadest is Octolens at $159 a month billed yearly. Prices below were read from each company's own website on November 1, 2026.

A disclosure first: I build Ownfeed, one of the tools below. To keep that from bending the comparison, the tools are sorted by their cheapest paid monthly plan, every tool gets a "who it is not for" line, and Syften's own strengths get a section at the end.

Why people look past Syften

Syften is a keyword alert service that has run since 2019. You write search filters, and it watches Reddit, Hacker News, Bluesky, Mastodon, Indie Hackers, Slack communities, Stack Overflow, YouTube, GitHub and more (X is a paid add-on), then sends matches to your inbox, Slack or an API. It offers a 14-day free trial with no card. Most of the reasons to leave are about price structure rather than quality.

  • The Entry plan is $29.95 a month and has no X, and allows 3 community filters, 100 community results a day, and 1 web filter. A product with several customer types can fill that quickly.
  • X monitoring is an optional add-on at $40 a month, available from the Standard plan, and YouTube is $20 a month. With X, the cheapest setup is Standard plus X at $89.95 a month.
  • AI filtering, which removes noisy matches before they reach your alerts, starts at the $49.95 Standard plan. Entry users filter with query syntax only.
  • It is a search tool. You decide the words, and you read and judge every match yourself. If you would rather describe your product once and have a tool find the posts, that is a different design.

Table 1 puts the 8 alternatives next to Syften. Figure 1 shows the same entry prices as bars. The next sections cover each tool, in the same order, with what it does, what it costs, and who it is not for.

F5Bot: the cheapest paid step

F5Bot emails you when your keywords appear on Reddit, Hacker News or Lobsters. The Free plan costs nothing but allows 5 keywords and alerts up to 2 hours late. Silver is $12.99 a month ($143 a year) and raises that to 20 keywords with alerts within 5 minutes and keyword filtering. Gold at $49.99 adds AI filtering and instant or scheduled delivery.

Not for you if you sell to people on X or LinkedIn, since no plan covers them. Also note that F5Bot says Silver is for personal, non-commercial use, so a company should look at Gold.

KWatch.io: the widest coverage under $20

KWatch.io monitors Reddit, Hacker News, X, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn for keywords. The free plan gives 2 alerts each on Reddit and Hacker News. Essential is $19 a month and gives 20 alerts each on Reddit and Hacker News, 2 on X and YouTube, and 1 each on Facebook and LinkedIn, with filtering, saved results and AI analysis. Business is $79 and adds the API, webhooks, Slack and bulk keyword upload.

Not for you if you need many X keywords. Two X alerts on Essential is a sampler, and the 10 on the $79 Business plan is the first real volume.

RedShip: Reddit threads in a morning shortlist

RedShip is built around Reddit only. It checks Reddit every morning, matches new posts against your keywords and your brand, and sends the threads it thinks are worth your time. The Founder plan is $29 a month for 1 tracked product, 10 custom keywords and 3 tracked competitors, with email and Slack notifications. It also watches which Reddit threads rank on Google and how AI tools cite them, weekly.

Not for you if you need Hacker News, X or anything outside Reddit, or if you want alerts within minutes, since it runs once a day.

Subreddit Signals: buyer intent inside chosen subreddits

Subreddit Signals monitors up to 10 subreddits on the $29 a month Starter plan and classifies each post by buyer intent, with a comment builder and an engagement queue. Pro is $59 for 5 brands and 25 subreddits. Both plans start with a 14-day trial that asks for a card.

Not for you if you want to search all of Reddit rather than a list of subreddits, or if your customers also post elsewhere. It covers Reddit only.

Ownfeed: paste a URL instead of writing filters

Ownfeed is the tool I build. You paste your product URL, it reads the page, and every day it searches public posts on Reddit, X, Bluesky and Hacker News. AI keeps only posts where your product would help, such as people describing a problem or asking for a tool, and puts them in one feed. You reply in your own words. It never posts for you and never connects to your social accounts. It costs $1 for a 1-day trial, then $39 a month, or $89 every 3 months.

Not for you if you want to monitor your brand name, run precise boolean queries, or reach LinkedIn, Mastodon, forums and Slack groups. It looks for people who need a product like yours, not for mentions of a given word, and it updates once a day.

Awario: a brand-monitoring tool with Boolean search

Awario is a social listening tool for brands, with sites for Reddit and Twitter monitoring. Starter is $49 a month on monthly billing, or $29 a month billed yearly. It allows 3 topics with unlimited keywords each, 30,000 new mentions a month and Boolean search. Pro is $149. The free trial needs no card.

Not for you if your goal is finding buyers rather than tracking brand mentions. Its pitch is monitoring and reporting, so expect to filter for purchase intent yourself.

Buska: buying signals across 16+ sources

Buska markets itself as social listening that finds buyers, not mentions. Starter is $49 a month with a 7-day free trial and no card. It monitors 5 signals and 2 ideal-customer profiles across 16 or more sources, including Twitter, Reddit and LinkedIn, with daily lead updates and Slack or Discord notifications. Growth is $99 and adds 28 or more sources, updates every 3 hours and an AI reply studio.

Not for you if you want a one-person tool at the lowest price. Its pages are written for sales and growth teams, and the faster updates start at $99.

Octolens: the broadest, and the most expensive

Octolens covers Reddit, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Overflow and review sites. Pro is shown as $159 a month billed annually, with 10 keywords, 15,000 mentions, hourly refresh, AI that filters every mention, and an API, webhooks and an MCP server. The trial is 7 days with no card.

Not for you if you are a solo founder watching a budget. Ten keywords at $159 is built for brand and marketing teams.

Where Syften is still the better choice

Syften covers a wider spread of places than the Reddit-focused tools above: forums, Discourse, Stack Exchange, podcasts, Slack communities, GitHub and blogs, as well as the big networks. Its query syntax lets you write exact filters, and the archive search shows who mentioned you in the past. Its top plan adds full archive history and webhooks. If your product lives in niche communities, or you track competitors and brand mentions across the open web, none of the cheaper tools above replace it.

How to choose

  1. Write down which Syften limit pushed you out: the filter count, the X add-on, or the lack of AI filtering. If you cannot name one, stay.
  2. If you only need Reddit, RedShip, Subreddit Signals or F5Bot cost less and do that one job.
  3. If you need X as well, add the price of the add-on to Syften first, which makes Standard plus X $89.95 a month, and compare that with Ownfeed, KWatch.io, Awario and Buska.
  4. Prefer tools where you write the reply. Reddit communities remove promotional comments, and a tool that posts for you puts your account at risk.
  5. Run a free trial for a week and compare the inboxes. Syften, Awario, Buska, Octolens, KWatch.io and Subreddit Signals all offer a trial or free tier.

If you would rather start by hand, the guide to finding customers on Reddit covers searching and replying without any tool. The F5Bot alternatives guide goes deeper on the free end of this list.

How much does Syften cost?

Entry is $29.95 a month and Standard is $49.95 a month, with a 14-day free trial and no card. Entry has no X. X monitoring is a $40 a month add-on on Standard or above, and YouTube is $20 a month. AI filtering starts at Standard.

Is there a free alternative to Syften?

F5Bot's Free plan covers Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters with 5 keywords and alerts up to 2 hours late, for personal use. KWatch.io's free plan gives 2 keyword alerts each on Reddit and Hacker News.

Which Syften alternative monitors X and Reddit together?

Ownfeed, KWatch.io, Awario, Buska and Octolens all list both. Syften can too, but X is a $40 a month add-on that needs the Standard plan, so it costs $89.95 a month in total. RedShip, Subreddit Signals and F5Bot do not cover X.

Which alternative works without writing keyword filters?

Ownfeed starts from your product URL, and Buska starts from ideal-customer profiles and signals. RedShip and Subreddit Signals take a product or brand description. F5Bot, KWatch.io, Awario and Syften are keyword or query tools.

Method and limits

  • All prices and features come from each company's own website, read on November 1, 2026. Where a page did not show something, it is left out rather than taken from a third-party site. Prices change, so check before you buy. Buska's buska.app site could not be reached, so its details come from buska.io.
  • Tools were chosen from earlier research on Reddit and social monitoring tools, limited to tools with a visible price. Mentionlytics was left out because its monthly and yearly prices could not be read apart. GummySearch closed on November 30, 2025, so it is not listed. The list is not exhaustive.
  • The noise column describes how each tool says it filters, from its own site. I did not run a side-by-side test of result quality or alert speed.
  • Conflict of interest: I build and sell Ownfeed, one of the tools compared. No tool paid for or reviewed this guide, and there are no affiliate links.
